Primetime is a 2026 A24 biographical crime thriller starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, the television journalist behind NBC’s To Catch a Predator. Directed by Lance Oppenheim, the film dramatizes the rise of the controversial sting series and the ethical questions surrounding its broadcast. It premieres at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival before opening in theaters on September 25, 2026.

The film marks a significant new milestone for both its star and its director. Pattinson takes on a real-life public figure for the first time in his career, while Oppenheim previously known for acclaimed documentaries such as Some Kind of Heaven and HBO’s Ren Faire makes his narrative feature directing debut.

    What the Film Covers

Set in the mid-2000s, Primetime follows Hansen as he builds To Catch a Predator, the Dateline NBC series that used online decoys posing as minors and hidden cameras to confront adult men seeking to meet children for sex. The show generated record ratings for NBC and made Hansen a household name, but it also drew sustained criticism over entrapment concerns, coordination with online watchdog groups, and the blurring line between active criminal investigations and prime-time entertainment.

Rather than functioning as a conventional biopic, the film examines how television producers, journalists, and network executives turned the program into a cultural phenomenon. It explores the tension between journalism and commercial spectacle, examining whether the show represented genuine investigative reporting, vigilante justice, or ratings-driven sensationalism. The narrative draws on real events and is partly informed by Luke Dittrich’s 2007 Esquire article, “Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die.”

Trailer material indicates the film does not present Hansen heroically. Instead, it frames him as a driven, morally ambiguous figure chasing media clout a portrayal early reactions have compared to Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in Nightcrawler. That framing follows a 2025 documentary, Predators, directed by David Osit, which separately examined the ethical legacy of the To Catch a Predator franchise.

    Cast and Crew

Robert Pattinson stars as Chris Hansen and also serves as a producer under his Icki Eneo Arlo banner. Supporting cast members include Merritt Wever as Hansen’s producer, Skyler Gisondo as Dan Plumb (a young actor hired for the show’s sting operations), and Anna Faris as Mary Joan Hansen, Chris Hansen’s wife. Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers makes her feature acting debut, appearing alongside her father, Sean Bridgers.

Producers include Robert Pattinson, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Fred Berger, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, with additional producing credits for William Iannaccone, Tyler Campellone, and Brighton McCloskey. Ajon Singh makes his feature screenwriting debut with the project. The supporting cast is rounded out by Matthew Maher, Bokeem Woodbine, Jonathan Lipnicki, and Tony Revolori.

    Production Timeline and Release Schedule

A24 formally announced the project in October 2024, with Oppenheim directing and Pattinson producing. Filming began in New Orleans in February 2025 under the working title Bluefin Tuna and wrapped in late March 2025.

Primetime will premiere in main competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it competes for the Golden Lion. It then opens in theaters across North America on September 25, 2026. International distribution includes a theatrical-first release through Lionsgate Play in select territories starting in late September 2026. No streaming release date has been announced. The film’s runtime is 107 minutes. For theatrical showtimes and promotional updates, check the official A24 Primetime page.

Themes and Why the Film Stands Out

Unlike a straightforward true-crime drama, Primetime centers on the television production process itself rather than the individual criminal cases. The film examines how early-2000s reality television shaped public opinion, whether the sting operations crossed legal boundaries, and how broadcast journalism adapted to high-stakes entertainment demands.

Pattinson’s performance closely recreating Hansen’s cadence and on-air mannerisms has generated widespread coverage following the trailer release. A24’s track record with award-focused filmmaking, combined with Oppenheim’s transition from documentary to scripted narrative, makes Primetime one of the autumn season’s most closely watched releases.

    Pattinson’s 2026 Film Slate

Primetime arrives during an active year for Pattinson, who also appears in A24’s The Drama alongside Zendaya and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (released July 2026), with a scheduled role in Dune: Part Three in December 2026. Awards trackers currently place Pattinson among the top contenders for Best Actor heading into the fall festival season.
