Nick Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowl running back who spent eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans, officially announced his retirement from the NFL on August 21, 2026, at age 30. Chubb concludes his professional career with 7,349 rushing yards, 54 rushing touchdowns, and a 5.0 yards-per-carry average across 100 regular-season games, ranking third on Cleveland’s all-time rushing leaderboard behind Hall of Fame rushers Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.

    Retirement Decision and Final Statement

Chubb announced his decision in a statement published on Instagram, explaining that he chose to step away from professional football to prioritize long-term physical health after an eight-year career defined by elite production and grueling rehabilitation cycles.

“Twelve-year-old me could have never imagined where this game would take us. But 30-year-old me can look back and say we gave it everything we had… In the NFL, I wanted to lead the league in rushing, win MVP, and win a Super Bowl for the city of Cleveland. I wasn’t able to accomplish any of those things… And what’s most frustrating, but also gives me peace, is that I know for a fact I gave it my all.” — Nick Chubb

After completing the 2025 season with Houston, Chubb tested unrestricted free agency through early August before officially closing his playing chapter.

    College Dominance at Georgia (2014–2017)

Before Nick Chubb NFL career, Chubb established himself as one of the most prolific rushers in Southeastern Conference history with the Georgia Bulldogs football program.

    • 4,769 collegiate rushing yards across four seasons, finishing second in program history behind Herschel Walker.
    • Overcame a severe multi-ligament tear (torn MCL, PCL, and LCL) in his left knee during a 2015 game against Tennessee.
    • Returned in 2016 and 2017 to help guide Georgia to an SEC Championship and an appearance in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship game.

NFL Prime with the Cleveland Browns (2018–2024)

Selected by Cleveland in the second round (35th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb quickly became the focal point of the franchise’s offense.

Between 2019 and 2022, Nick Chubb earned four consecutive Pro Bowl selections while posting four straight 1,000-yard rushing campaigns. His peak regular season came in 2022, when he posted career highs with 1,525 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 5.0 yards per carry, earning Second-Team All-Pro honors. In total, Chubb compiled 6,843 rushing yards in a Browns uniform.

    Career Statistics Overview

According to official regular-season game records documented on Pro-Football-Reference, Chubb retires with historically elite rushing efficiency:

    Major Injuries and Rebound Campaigns

Throughout Nick Chubb collegiate and professional career, Chubb’s legacy remained closely tied to his resilience following severe lower-body trauma.

    • 2023 Knee Trauma: In Week 2 of the 2023 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chubb suffered damage to his left knee, tearing the MCL, meniscus, and medial capsule. The recovery required two separate surgical repairs and kept him off the field for over a calendar year.
    • 2024 Return to Cleveland: Chubb returned midway through 2024, appearing in eight games and rushing for 332 yards and three scores before an unassociated foot injury ended his final season with the Browns.

Final Campaign with the Houston Texans (2025)

In June 2025, Chubb signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans. Functioning in a rotational and short-yardage backfield role alongside rookie Woody Marks, Chubb logged 15 appearances (9 starts), contributing 506 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 122 carries along with 13 receptions for 67 yards.

    Legacy and Impact

Nick Chubb steps away as one of the most efficient pure ball-carriers of his generation. Maintaining a career mark of 5.0 yards per carry over nearly 1,500 attempts, he balanced elite contact balance, explosive burst, and textbook cutback vision with a quiet, blue-collar leadership style that cemented his status as a modern Cleveland Browns icon.
