Denzel Washington is a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, director and producer whose career spans film, television, theater and Broadway. His landmark performances include Glory, Malcolm X, Training Day, Fences and The Equalizer franchise.

At 71, Washington remains active on screen and stage. His recent credits include Gladiator II and Highest 2 Lowest, while his upcoming projects include Netflix’s heist thriller Here Comes the Flood and the planned Marvel film Black Panther 3.

    Who Is Denzel Washington?

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York. He initially considered studying journalism and medicine at Fordham University, but his interest in acting grew after he participated in a staff talent show while working at a YMCA camp.

Denzel Washington graduated from Fordham in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts in drama and journalism. He later briefly attended the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco before returning to New York and beginning his professional acting career.

He gained national attention as Dr. Philip Chandler on NBC’s medical drama St. Elsewhere, which aired from 1982 to 1988. His film career expanded soon afterward, leading to acclaimed roles in historical dramas, crime thrillers, action movies and stage productions.

    Oscar Wins and Defining Roles

Washington has won two Academy Awards. He received his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Glory and his second for Best Actor for Training Day. The Academy has recognized him with 10 total Academy Award nominations across acting and producing (Fences):

In Glory, Denzel Washington played Private Silas Trip, a formerly enslaved man serving in one of the Union Army’s first all-Black regiments during the Civil War.

He earned another Best Actor nomination for portraying civil rights leader Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s 1992 biographical drama. His Oscar-winning performance in Training Day came as Alonzo Harris, a corrupt Los Angeles narcotics detective.

Other major roles include lawyer Joe Miller in Philadelphia, boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter in The Hurricane, pilot Whip Whitaker in Flight, Troy Maxson in Fences, Macrinus in Gladiator II and music executive David King in Highest 2 Lowest.

    Directing, Producing and Stage Work

Washington made his feature directing debut with Antwone Fisher in 2002. He later directed The Great Debaters, Fences and A Journal for Jordan.

He also served as a producer on The Piano Lesson, an adaptation of August Wilson’s play directed by his son, Malcolm Washington. His work behind the camera has often focused on family, education, history and personal responsibility.

Washington has maintained a significant stage career, including Broadway productions of Fences, A Raisin in the Sun, The Iceman Cometh and Othello. He won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as Troy Maxson in Fences.

In 2025, he returned to Broadway as Othello opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, who played Iago.

    The Spike Lee Partnership

Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee have built one of modern cinema’s most notable actor-director partnerships. Their work began with Mo’ Better Blues in 1990 and continued with:

    • Malcolm X (1992)
    • He Got Game (1998)
    • Inside Man (2006)
    • Highest 2 Lowest (2025)

Highest 2 Lowest reinterprets Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low. Washington plays New York music executive David King alongside Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival before its theatrical and Apple TV+ release.

Lee has suggested that the movie could be his final collaboration with Washington. He has also discussed Washington’s possible retirement, but Washington has not made a formal retirement announcement.

What Is Denzel Washington’s Next Movie?

    Here Comes the Flood

Washington’s most significant reported upcoming release is Netflix’s Here Comes the Flood, an unconventional heist thriller directed by Fernando Meirelles, whose credits include City of God and The Two Popes.

Netflix describes the movie as a story about a bank guard, a teller and a master thief caught in a dangerous game of cons and double-crosses. The cast includes Washington, Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Danai Gurira and Sean Harris.

The film was previously associated with Netflix’s 2026 release plans. Reports by Variety on film slate shifts indicated that it was moving toward a 2027 release as studios adjusted their crowded awards-season schedules. Netflix has not announced a specific release date.

    Black Panther 3

Washington has been linked to Ryan Coogler’s planned Black Panther 3. Washington previously said that Coogler was writing a role for him, but Marvel Studios has not publicly confirmed his character or formally detailed his casting.

If the role proceeds, the film would mark Washington’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Details about his character and the movie’s story remain undisclosed.

What Happened to the Hannibal Film?

Washington was attached to a planned Netflix historical film about Hannibal, the ancient Carthaginian military commander. The project was expected to reunite him with Antoine Fuqua, the director of Training Day and The Equalizer movies.

The film now appears to be stalled. Reports and comments attributed to cinematographer Robert Richardson suggest that the project may have fallen through, but Netflix has not issued a formal cancellation announcement. The most accurate description is that the Hannibal project is not currently moving forward.

    Is Denzel Washington Retiring?

There is no verified formal retirement announcement from Washington. Comments by Spike Lee and unverified online speculation have fueled retirement stories, but they should not be presented as confirmed news.

Washington remains professionally active through recent films, reported upcoming projects and stage work. His current career continues to combine dramatic performances, commercial thrillers, directing, producing and theater.

Why Denzel Washington’s Career Still Matters

Washington has maintained a rare balance between acclaimed dramas and mainstream entertainment. Malcolm X, Fences, Flight and The Tragedy of Macbeth showcase his dramatic range, while Man on Fire and The Equalizer films demonstrate his appeal in action roles.

His career also extends beyond screen acting. Through directing, producing and Broadway performances, Washington has supported stories about history, family, ambition and social responsibility.

As of August 2026, the clearest update is that Here Comes the Flood is expected in 2027, with no exact Netflix release date announced. Black Panther 3 remains in development with Washington linked to a role, while the Hannibal project appears stalled. Washington himself has not announced a retirement.
